Gil Miciak is an associate within Duncan Craig LLP’s Litigation and Financial Services practice groups, with a focus on civil litigation, debt recovery, and insolvency.
Gil accepts a variety of litigation cases, especially those involving property rights and commercial disputes. As a former criminal lawyer, Gil regularly advises clients in cases where civil disputes intersect with criminal or regulatory issues or have police involvement. He has experience defending a range of regulatory charges, including under occupational health and safety legislation. Gil also has experience in dealing with administrative law matters, with a particular interest in professional regulation and disciplinary issues.
Within the Financial Services group, Gil represents a variety of large and small lenders, individuals, and other interested parties in foreclosure and debt recovery proceedings, priority disputes, and judgment enforcement. Gil also works in the areas of bankruptcy, insolvency, and restructuring.
Gil has conducted many trials and appeals across Alberta, and was lead counsel on an application for leave to appeal at the Supreme Court of Canada.
In Gil's Own Words:
"I work mainly in insolvency and debt enforcement. I work for everyone from large banking institutions to individuals. That can mean anything from managing a large volume foreclosure practice, or an individual debt or contract dispute. Each client needs a different approach: some need systems put in place to handle communication and tracking of a lot of files at once, and integration into an existing corporate organization. Other clients need focused litigation strategy to get around a very particular issue. Ultimately, my job is to identify what a particular client needs on a particular file, and deliver it, and that’s what I focus on doing."
Gil obtained his Juris Doctor (with Distinction) in 2019. In law school, Gil was awarded the Norman J Pollock, QC Prize in Advocacy, the Louise McKinney Scholarship, the Professor Trevor Anderson Prize in Jurisprudence, and was on the Dean’s List. After articling with the Alberta Courts, Gil was called to the Alberta Bar in 2020.
Gil was born and raised in Edmonton, where he now lives with his partner. In his spare time, Gil enjoys tackling crosswords and playing board games. He is also part of a gold-medal trivia team.
