Disputes over wills and estates can be complicated, stressful, and upsetting. For over 30 years, Helen Ward has successfully advised family members, estate executors, and trust companies on how to approach and resolve estate disputes, both in and out of court.

As a recognized leader in the field of estate litigation, Helen advises clients throughout Canada on disputes involving mental capacity, the interpretation of wills, conflicts between executors and beneficiaries, dependency issues, as well as issues involving powers of attorney and personal directives. Helen’s clear, pragmatic advice helps clients make decisions as she offers clients options on how to move forward. Aware of the stressful nature of estate cases, Helen helps clients avoid cost, time and risk, avoiding trial at times through the use of mediation and other dispute resolution alternatives.

As a past sessional instructor in wills at the University of Alberta Law School, Helen has also taught and presented papers for various groups, including the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association and STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Planners). Helen is a member of STEP and a regular participant at the Senior Practitioners' Estate Planning and Litigation Forum, held annually for leading estate practitioners from across Canada.

Helen also helps clients with all their estate planning needs, including the preparation of wills, powers of attorney, and personal directives; clients can rest easy knowing that their wishes will be handled with confidence. She also advises executors/personal representatives on the administration of a deceased’s estate.

Helen and her husband Greg have two adult daughters. When she’s not at her desk, Helen enjoys running and cycling in the Edmonton river valley, volunteering, hiking, reading, and visiting with friends. She and Greg recently kayaked in Gwaii Haanas, Haida Gwaii, and hiked in Ireland and look forward to their next adventure.
