Duncan Craig LLP Lawyers Mediators

About us

Firm Profile

We trace Duncan Craig LLP's roots back to 1894 with our founding partners William Short, who later served as first Mayor of the City of Edmonton, and Charles Cross, who became the first Attorney General of the Province of Alberta. As one of the oldest law firms in Alberta, our lawyers have built our business on a continuous connection to our communities and our clients and work hard to live up to our long tradition of finding excellent solutions for our clients with a clear focus.

Since our founding in 1894, our main office has had an established presence in the heart of Edmonton, never moving more than a few blocks from our current location in Rice Howard Place. In 1909 the firm moved to the very prestigious second floor of the Merchant's Bank Building, where Scotia Place now stands. From this move, the firm experienced steady growth for several years but, as with many businesses and professional firms in the City of Edmonton, did not go unscathed through the depression and the Second World War. As was consistent with the firm's character, the firm persevered and continued to build its business through these hard times by providing quality service and building connections within the community. This growth continued through the 1980's and early 1990's and was accelerated by mergers within the Edmonton area and in 1990 with a Vegreville law firm. In 2000 the firm became Duncan & Craig LLP. In 2006 another merger resulted in the opening of an office in Drayton Valley. In 2013 the firm name was changed to Duncan Craig LLP.

While our head office currently occupies the top three floors of Rice Howard Place Tower 1 in Edmonton, we also have an office in Drayton Valley. We have approximately 45 lawyers and close to 55 support staff that make up Duncan Craig LLP. Although our focus is on Alberta, we are able to provide legal services across Canada as among our lawyers are members of the bar in the provinces and territories of Manitoba, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and the Yukon. We also have relationships with numerous service providers in the United States and other countries.

Community has been at the centre of Duncan Craig LLP’s values since the firm’s inception in 1894 and the firm has always been an integral part of the provincial and civic communities. To celebrate 100 years of commitment to the community, in 1994, the lawyers at Duncan Craig LLP created the Laurel Awards to honour non-profit organizations in Edmonton and area, who further their objectives through exceptional creativity and innovation. Currently, the Laurel awards have been paused due to the pandemic and are now in a redevelopment stage. However, through our Edmonton Community Foundation Fund we are very proud to continue giving with the Staff Choice Award where Duncan Craig LLP staff are able to choose three charities annually.

Individually, the firm's past and present members have been and are heavily integrated into the Alberta community. A number of lawyers have been appointed as judges at the Provincial Court of Alberta and various superior court levels. Additionally, many lawyers, have served as MLAs, Aldermen, City Councillors and candidates for various elected offices at both the civic and provincial level as well as in a variety of volunteer roles for political parties at civic, provincial and federal levels. Finally, all lawyers and staff members are encouraged to, and many do, serve on a variety of community, athletic and charitable boards, organizations and service clubs.
