Join our team in the role of Wills/Estates Legal Assistant, providing support to the Estate Solutions Group.

The Wills/Estates Legal Assistant position (“the Legal Assistant”) is a dedicated role providing legal assistant services with respect to all estate client files for the Estate Solutions team. This individual will play a critical role in the overall workflow process and management of these files and will liaison extensively with the lawyers in this area.

This position manages and assumes all administrative responsibility for the files and performs procedural legal work under the supervision of the responsible lawyer on the file. This will include drafting applications for probates and related documents. This role liaisons extensively with clients, the court, agencies, and numerous Firm staff members and lawyers. Given the position includes the ability for client interaction, the individual must have a professional presence, demeanor, and outstanding communication skills.

The Legal Assistant shall have access to delegate appropriate tasks to support services such as the litigation clerk, document clerk, and evening WordPro, and shall be responsible for supervising the work performed and shall be responsible for the final work product performed by those individuals.

While the Legal Assistant has a specific and dedicated role, they remain part of the Estate Solutions Team. If their workload permits from time to time they may offer to assist the other legal assistants in the area, or in urgent situations they may be asked to help provide coverage on the estates team. In addition, in situations of high workload this individual may seek assistance on matters from the other legal assistants in the area as well.

The Legal Assistant may be required to attend client meetings.

This position is a senior level Legal Assistant requiring dedicated experience with wills and estates matters. Knowledge of the relevant legislation, the Alberta Rules of Court, and common law principles is required.

The Legal Assistant must be able to:

Supervise delegated work, ensure its completion and accuracy
Keep up to date with changing rules surrounding procedural matters
Develop/maintain collaborative working relationships with clients, lawyers, and team members
Function independently and proactively, and to contribute effectively within a team environment;
Demonstrate initiative, professional judgment, sensitivity and empathy
Demonstrate advanced Microsoft Word skills
Behave in a professional manner and present a professional work image at all times
Provide mentorship and/or training to others


Minimum two (2) year Legal Assistant Certificate/Diploma/Degree from a recognized College or equivalency minimum of four (4) years demonstrated senior level Legal Assistant experience plus advanced Microsoft Word skills are required,

Qualifications Needed:
  • Legal Assistant Diploma is preferred
  • Some litigation experience or estate litigation is preferred
  • Must be detail oriented, quick learner and have the ability to work in team atmosphere
  • Microsoft Office skills, dictation skills are required
  • Five or more years experience in Wills/Estates preferred
